Throughout history we have had a healthy antique and collectible ability. We had cars that were made strong and were absolutely collectible and still remain collectibles, we had American made products that still to this day remain highly collectible and strong. We had and still have coins, we have antique furniture and the list goes on. My question is, What will be the new era of antiques or will we not have any or very few. All of the items we make today I should say outsource today is mostly crap including the cars. it is highly doubtful that anything we bought from a bigbox store today will become collectible in the future.
What makes an item collectible
The collectible aspect comes from a strong desire to own a piece of the past, an item that was of importance or highly desired back in the day. We have classic movies that are timeless such as Scarface, Godfather, Star Wars, A Miracle on 34th Street, The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music and the list goes on. These are are classic because they have a timeless sort of effect to them and continue to be enjoyable no matter what year they were watched although the world is highly different. Classic cars from all makers in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s are all highly desirable now and are bringing much higher values than they did back then.
When you see something that is collectible you know it, you can just feel that this item was extremely desirable and that many people today would love to collect it and keep it clean for further generations to enjoy. How many times did you throw something away that you had as a kid, or watch you’re dad sell what would have been a very expensive car today for peanuts but you were too young to realize anything like that. I just think about all the antiques I could have had now that were thrown out or sold for pennies, including the star wars space ship toys from back in the 80’s.
What to collect today
As much as I want to hold on to things I bought several years ago, I wonder will any of this have value in the future. I just don’t see anything we have today holding any kind of value at all in the next 20 or 30 years to come. The cars are made as disposable cars like Bic lighters, in fact I could’t even think of any car built today that will be a collectible in the future. I look at clothes and they are nothing but confused designs of certain things we had in the past, or how about movies? Will there be any timeless collectible movies from today?
Is any of the outsourced junk we have cluttered our market with of timeless value? Perhaps some things that we would never really think about but certainly not as much stuff as before. This is just a hunch and i could be very wrong as I never thought some of the stuff from the 80’s or older back then would be worth nearly what it is worth today at auction. So some of this outsourced stuff might be collectible and we just don’t see it.
It is a new world out there and iconic things things such as a thriving antique and collectible market might very well be gone in the future.
