One thing at our house is whether tight for money or business is great we always love to have the finest sheets to curl into at night. You know, the sheets that have that cool feel to the body and that amazing super soft material that can only come from real Egyptian cotton. My, things have changed in just a few short years. We found out quickly that either those sheets do not exist anymore or just aren’t being sold in the stores like Macy’s or Nordstrom’s.
It had been a few years since we shopped for sheets since the Egyptian cotton high end ones that we have are doing excellent. Arrived at Macy’s and in Macy’s there are only a select couple brands of sheets that used to be good. The one good sheet was the Calvin Klein higher end sheet that they once offered, which was OK, felt Ok, cool and soft but only lasted around 4 years of minimal usage. The other brand which we became loyal buyers of is called Hotel Collection which offered the finest quality Egyptian cotton available. Come to find out that the high end brand that we are used to Hotel Collection now specialize in a China made, or Portugal made far less quality sheet than a few short years ago. The new sheets, wrinkle badly, they are not nearly as soft and are obviously not even close to luxury. So we further investigated and here is what we found.
The Problem with Egyptian Cotton today
Just like our once healthy vegetable market got destroyed and we now have a highly cancerous vegetable market, the same goes for cotton, cotton was replaced by genetically modified cotton called BT Cotton which is not even close in texture and feel. Not only does BT cotton suck in luxury, but it has been tested and found to be highly toxic to the individuals that work near or we can imagine that they end up being the end user of the products, in this case “Egyptian cotton sheets”
Monsanto has been filing law suits against farmers that supposedly accidently end up with patented and controlled Monsanto seeds on their farms. For this reason there is an extremely high rate of Farmer suicides since 2008. According to other online sources Cotton farmers of India has had the highest suicide rate on record with the following statistics:
Farmers in India became the centre of considerable concern in the 1990s when the journalist P Sainath highlighted the large number of suicides among them. Official reports initially denied the farmer suicides but as more and more information came to light the government began to accept that farmers in India were under considerable stress. On figures there was much debate since the issue was so emotive. More than 17,500 farmers a year killed themselves between 2002 and 2006, according to experts who have analyzed government statistics.
Others traced the beginning of the increase in farmer suicides to the early 1990s. It was said, a comprehensive all-India study is still awaited, that most suicides occurred in states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Punjab. The situation was grim enough to force at least the Maharashtra government to set up a dedicated office to deal with farmers distress.
In 2006, the state of Maharashtra, with 4,453 farmers’ suicides accounted for over a quarter of the all-India total of 17,060, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). NCRB also stated that there were at least 16,196 farmers’ suicides in India in 2008, bringing the total since 1997 to 199,132.According to another study by the Bureau, while the number of farm suicides increased since 2001, the number of farmers has fallen, as thousands abandoning agriculture in distress.
According to government data, over 5,000 farmers committed suicide in 2005-2009 in Maharashtra, while 1,313 cases reported by Andhra Pradesh between 2005 and 2007. In Karnataka the number stood at 1,003, since 2005-06 till August 2009. According to IFFRI study number of suicides during 2005-2009 in Gujarat 387, Kerala 905, Punjab 75 and Tamil Nadu 26.In April 2009, the state of Chattisgarh reported 1,500 farmers committed suicide due to debt and crop failure. At least 17,368 Indian farmers killed themselves in 2009, the worst figure for farm suicides in six years, according to data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
According to the latest statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (2012), the farmer suicides statistics are as follows (Note: The NCRB lists suicides in the different employment categories, but it is not necessary that farming or crop-failure is the cause of the suicides listed in the “farmer” category
We find it horrendous that this company will be controlling the entire vegetable and cotton markets putting our health more at risk than ever before. Cancer rates among genetically modified foods have skyrocketed more than smoking ever has and the reasons are clear. Monsanto claims these suicides are due to other reasons as they state on their website, but we all know what the truth is.
Responsible technology lists some of the found sicknesses that have been tested and here are a few of the toxic BT products that compile our crappy sheets today.
1.5 Workers exposed to Bt cotton developed allergies 1. Agricultural laborers in six villages who picked or loaded Bt cotton reported reactions of the skin, eyes and upper respiratory tract. 2. Some laborers required hospitalization. 3. Employees at a cotton gin factory take antihistamines everyday. 4. One doctor treated about 250 cotton laborers
1.6 Sheep died after grazing in Bt cotton fields 1. After the cotton harvest in parts of India, sheep herds grazed continuously on Bt cotton plants. 2. Reports from four villages revealed that about 25% of the sheep died within a week. 3. Post mortem studies suggest a toxic reaction.
1.7 Inhaled Bt corn pollen may have triggered disease in humans 1. In 2003, approximately 100 people living next to a Bt cornfield in the Philippines developed skin, respiratory, intestinal reactions and other symptoms while the corn was shedding pollen. 2. Blood tests of 39 people showed an antibody response to Bt-toxin, which supports—but does not prove—a link. 3. The symptoms reappeared in 2004 in at least four other villages that planted the same corn variety. 4. Villagers also attribute several animal deaths to the corn.
1.8 Farmers report pigs and cows became sterile from GM corn 1. More than 20 farmers in North America report that pigs fed GM corn varieties had low conception rates, false pregnancies or gave birth to bags of water. 2. Both male and female pigs became sterile. 3. Some farmers also report sterility among cows.
We especially found it interesting that Pigs and Cows are becoming sterile due to the BT toxins as shown, which might fall in line with the fertility plans on the peasants later.
So if you were wondering why Luxury sucks so badly in todays generation, between this and outsourcing you can pretty much figure out what exactly is going on. We can deal with losing our luxury, but to be forced toxic crap or to sleep on toxic sheets is not an option. We need to get our sheets back and allow Indian and Egyptian farmers to grow good cotton once again.
